Deleting the vocals of Dont be Afraid of Your Shadow was a blessing in disguise

An Idea Springs to Mind

I have been back in the studio briefly to start work on remixing the recording of "Don’t be Afraid of Your Shadow". It’s a great song and I really want to buff it up and get it shining in all it’s potential glory. To my dismay I found that the vocals have been lost. I don’t know how it happened, but I accept that, like many mysteries, the answer probably lies somewhere with me going unconscious and deleting them without thinking.

Actually, if you’ll allow me to digress for just a moment. Most unfathomable situations like that are the result of doing something whilst being ’switched off’, like putting your wallet down somewhere, and then forgetting about it, only to be convinced the next day when you ‘lose’ it and eventually find it that you are totally perplexed about how it could have possibly got there, even to the point of telling your wife that she must have moved it. Oh is that just me? Well it’s probably not just me, but never mind anyway!

The point is that I probably wiped the vocal takes myself without realizing it, so in order to bring the song up to the standard I want I had to re-record the vocals. Well I haven’t finished them yet, but whilst going through and re familiarizing myself with the lyrics I remembered how good recording the vocals makes me feel and I started getting really fired up and inspired. I had a funny idea and I tried recording the vocals in a different way to normal too, which seems to have added an extra, energetic dimension to the feel of the song, so there you go. In the wisdom of my intuition, which is what the Boy at Heart philosophy is all about I did know what I was doing when ‘inadvertently’ erasing my previous vocal takes.

So now I have the task of completing those and I have decided to try making a video of the process, which will either result in me looking like a complete fool or it’ll be great. My new vocal recording technique, whilst likely not very original is a first for me and will give me a chance to ham it up a bit, which sounds like fun. It’s really got me into the idea of focusing more on this website as a kind of unorthodox radio station. Not really a radio station at all actually, but a musical playground, where it’s OK to get serious and OK to just be downright silly and to express whatever mood is fitting for the day; all in the name of inspiration and sharing.

I’m also leaving the voting open for the next live performance song until the end of September, so you can still vote here. I won’t say which song has the most votes so far, but I’m not surprised at what is looking like the runaway winner!

Also, everyone’s a winner now too. The prize I was going to give away is now available to every person who subscribes as a VIP on this site, so tune into the radio station of your heart and get connected!
